I am delighted to announce the launch of “EAP1216 The Djerba Libraries Project,” a two-year effort to digitize several libraries on the island of Djerba, Tunisia. Funded by Arcadia (a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin) and administered by the British Library’s “Endangered Archives Programme,” the Djerba Libraries Project aims to produce digital facsimiles of the contents of seven entire collections. The project comes out of a plan laid during our EAP993 pilot project in 2017-18 to digitize the al-Bāsī (El Bessi) family library.

From 2019-21, I and my Tunisian colleague Dr Ali Boujdidi will be supervising a team of eight recent university graduates from Djerba and surrounding areas as they inventory and photograph collections that vary from a Hanafi and Maliki mosque library to private collections of Ibadi texts and family archives.

We will be launching a companion blog site to chronicle the progress of the project and to share some of the training materials that develop out of it. As soon as it is up and running, I’ll make sure to post it here. This is an exciting new project that hopefully will prove an important source of information on Ibadi and non-Ibadi communities in Jerba and throughout the Mediterranean.

يسرّني أن أعلن ببداية مشروعنا الجديد حول رقمنة مكتبات جزيرة جربة في تونس بدعم مؤسسة أركاديا في إطار “برنامج للأرشيفات المهدّدة بالانقراض” في المكتبة البريطانية. يستهدف مشروع “مكتبات جربة” إلى رقمنة سبع مكتبات خاصّة وعامّة ذات أرصدة مخطوطات إباضية وغير إباضية إضافة إلى مطبوعات حجرية مغربية وتونسية ومصرية. يثمّل المشروع توسيع لمشروعنا لرقمنة مكتبة الباسي في عاميْ ٢٠١٧-٢٠١٨

من ٢٠١٩ إلى ٢٠٢١، سنشرف أنا وزميلي التونسي د. علي البوجديدي على مجموع من الطلبة التوانسة من جربة وغيرها وهم يقومون بتجريد محتويات المكتبات وبرقمنتها. سنبدع مدوّنة خاصّة للمشروع في الأسبايع القادمة لتدوين العلمية وسأضع رابطا إليها عند إتمام تحضيرها
