Since I have not had the chance to travel and work on any Ibadi manuscripts lately, I decided to share the inventory of a collection of manuscripts I have worked with here in Morocco since December of last year. I prepared this inventory for use in a course on Islamic manuscript cultures of North Africa at Al Akhawayn University in January 2020. Students worked on detailed descriptions of those texts, but I have yet to edit them. In the meantime, the PDF of the inventory (with pictures) is available on the Libraries and Catalogs page here.

لم أستطع السفر منذ أشهر عدة ولهذا لم تكن لدي الفرصة الإطلاع على مخطوطات إباضية. لذلك قرّرت أن أضع هنا في المدوّنة جردا لمجموعة من مخطوطات مغربية أشتغل عليها منذ أواخر العام الماضي. حضّرت هذا الجرد أصلا للاستعمال في صف جامعي حول ثقافة المخطوطات في شمال إفريقيا في جامعة الأخوين في المغرب. وصف الطلبة المخطوطات بالتفاصيل ولكن عملهم يحتاج إلى المراجعة قبل النشر. أما الجرد الأولي فستجدها في صفحة “المكتبات والفهارس” هنا

“The Ifrane Collection,” is a remarkable private collection of mostly-Sufi titles from here in Morocco. It includes more than a dozen copies of Muḥammad b. Sulaymān al-Jazūlī’s (d.1465) Dalāʾil al-khayrāt, representing a range of styles and manuscripts traditions associated with that text.

The owner of the collection generously loaned us the manuscripts for use in the course, so students had the exceptional opportunity to study Islamic manuscript traditions in North Africa and gain hands-on experience examining real manuscripts. We paired these hands-on workshops with lectures in class and the wonderful lecture series on Islamic manuscripts by Evyn Kropf (University of Michigan), available online for free thanks to UCLA. I hope to prepare a more detailed description of the course in the near future.
