My forthcoming book, entitled The Ottoman Ibadis of Cairo now shows as “coming soon“ on the Cambridge University Press website. The book offers a social history of the Ibadi communities of Cairo from the 17th to the early 20th centuries through the story of a trade agency, school, and library known as the “Buffalo Agency” (Wikālat al-Jāmūs). It shows how Ibadis participated fully in the commercial, religious, legal, and political life of Ottoman Cairo and the broader empire over nearly three centuries. The book argues that one of the most important factors that encouraged this participation was their unusual status as both a part of the Muslim majority and a tight-knit minority community with a shared sense of belonging.

ظهر غلاف كتابي المقبل –عنوانه إباضية القاهرة العثمانيون – على موقع مطبعة جامعة كامبريج لأنّه سيصدر قريبا. يقدّم الكتاب تاريخا اجتماعيا للجماعات الإباضية الذين سكنوا القاهرة بمصر من القرن السابع عشر حتى بداية القرن العشرين من خلال قصة الوكالة التجارية والمدرسة والمكتبة المعروفة بـ”وكالة الجاموس”. يروي الكتاب كيف الجماعات الإباضية شاركوا مشاركة كاملة وفعّالة في الميادين التجارية والدينية والقانونية والسياسية بالقاهرة العثمانية خصوصا وبالإمبراطورية عموما عبر ثلاثة قرون. وما شجّعهم على تلك المشاركة هو وضعهم الاستثنائي: في آن واحد كانوا جزءا من الأغلبية المسلمة وأقلية لها روابط داخلية وثيقة وشعور بالانتماء المشترك
