Since 2015, I have had the opportunity to lead a number of manuscript conservation and digitisation projects. These have been efforts to protect private collections of manuscripts on the island of Djerba in Tunisia and have included both Ibadi and non-Ibadi libraries.
منذ عام 2015، كانت لديّ عدّة فرص لإدارة مبادرات ومشاريع لحفظ المخطوطات ورقمنتها. هذه المشاريع عبارة عن محاولات لحفظ أرصدة مكتبات خاصّة في جزيرة جربة في تونس سواء كانت مكتبات إباضية أو غير إباضية. تقدّم الصور الآتية استطلاعا سريعا حول هذه المشاريع
The Sālim b. Yaʿqūb Ibadi Manuscript Project (2014-15) | مشروع مكتبة الشيخ سالم بن يعقوب
In 2015, I received funding from The Islamic Manuscript Association (TIMA) through Collection Care and Emergency Response Grant to carry out an inventory of a well known collection of Ibadi manuscripts in Djerba that belong to the Bin Yaʿqūb family. The library was assembled in the 20th century by Shaykh Sālim b. Yaʿqūb (d.1991), a prominent scholar and historian from Djerba. The project resulted in a published inventory of several hundred items in the Journal of Islamic Manuscripts (available for download here) and represented a preliminary step in preserving the library for the future. The images here show the library before the project began, during the process of inventory, and the final stages in which the items were placed in acid-free archival boxes and folders for storage.
في عام 2015 حصلت على إعانة من “هيئة المخطوطات الإسلامية “ للقيام بجرد مكتبة إباضية تملكها عائلة بن يعقوب في جربة. تكوّنت المكتبة في القرن العشرين بفضل جهود الشيخ المؤرّخ سالم بن محمد بن يعقوب (ت1991). نتج المشروع عن جردا منشورا في مجلّة المخطوطات الإسلامية (يمكن تنزيل المقال هنا). كان المشروع مجرّد الخطوة الأولى في تنظيم هذه المكتبة القيمة وحفظها للمستقبل. في الصور التالية ترون مخطوطات المكتبة في مراحل المشروع المختلفة، بدايةً من الأوراق في الخزانة قبل المشروع وثم صور من عملية الجرد وأخيرا ترون صور عملية وضع المخطوطات في الصناديق الأرشيفية للتخزين
Inventory of the manuscripts at the Association pour la sauvegarde de l’île de Djerba (2015-2018) | جرد المخطوطات في مكتبة جمعية صيانة جزيرة جربة
Over the course of a few summers of fieldwork in Djerba beginning in 2015 and ending in 2018, I regularly returned to a small collection of manuscripts held at the Association pour la sauvegarde de l’ île de Djerba (AASIDJ) in Houmet Souk. Eventually, this resulted in an inventory of the manuscripts volumes and some miscellaneous manuscript materials held there , which is now available on their website here. The images below show the process of the inventory, which included labeling the items and preparing physical descriptions of them. The final photo shows how I left the items in 2018, stored in acid-free archival boxes and folders .

Al-Bāsī Family Library Project (2017-2018) | مشروع رقمنة مكتبة الباسيين بجربة
The El Bessi (al-Bāsī) family library originated as the library of the al-Bāsī Mosque in Djerba. Founded in the 18th century, the endowed mosque library came to include some 200 manuscript volumes of religious and natural sciences, Sufism, and much more. This project (EAP993) was supported by a Pilot Grant from the Endangered Archives Programme, funded by the Arcadia Foundation and administered by the British Library. The project was led by myself and my colleague, Dr. ʿAlī Būjdidid (Ali Boujdidi), a Professor of Arabic at the University of Gabes and director of the Association d’Animation Culturelle de Djerba. The videos and photos below show the equipment used and the process of cleaning and photographing the manuscripts, as well as the training sessions in which the EAP993 team members learned about codicology, manuscript conservation, cataloging, and digital photography. تأسّست مكتبة الباسيين في آخر القرن الثامن عشر الميلادي. من تأسيسها حتى القرن العشرين، كانت المكتبة عبارة عن مكتبة المدرسة المربوطة بجامع الباسيين في جربة ولكنها تنقلت إلى ملك عائلة الباسي فيما بعد. المكتبة قيمة وتتضمن حوال 200 مجلّدا تشتمل على نصوص دينية وغير دينية لعلماء إباضية وغير إباضية. مشروع رقمنة مكتبة الباسيين بدأ في عام 2017 بإعانة من مؤسّسة أركاديا في إطار “برنامج الأرشيفات المهدّدة بالانقراض” التابع للمكتبة البريطانية. تجدون أكثر معلومات حول المشروع هنا في موقع المكتبة البريطانية وفي المستقبل القريب صور المخطوطات كلها ستكون متواجدة في نفس الموقع. رأسنا المشروع أنا وزميلي الدكتور علي البوجديدي (أستاذ اللغة العربية وآدابها بجامعة قابس ومدير جمعية التنشيط الثقافي بجربة) . ترون في الفيديوات والصور الآتية مراحل المشروع المختلفة إضافة إلى فيديو من المعرض للعموم الذي نظّمناه عند إتمام المشروع في عام 2018

Jerba Libraries Project (2019-2021) | مشروع مكتبات جربة
This project (EAP1216), which began in summer 2019, is also supported by a grant from the Endangered Archives Programme, funded by the Arcadia Foundation and administered by the British Library. It is a continuation of the pilot project (EAP993) from 2017-18 and continues until fall 2021. The project, led again by myself and my colleague Dr. ʿAlī Bujdīdī (University of Gabes), includes seven libraries of manuscript and early print materials, including both Ibadi and non-Ibadi collections. You can learn more about the project and soon will be able to access images of the entire library here: https://eap.bl.uk/project/EAP1216. I will be adding information and photographs about each library as the project progresses.
في صيف عام 2019 بدأنا مشروعا جديدا عنوانه “مشروع مكتبات جربة.” يستهدف هذا المشروع الذي سيستغرق لمدة عامين (2019-2021) إلى رقمنة سبع مكتبات (ستة خاصّة ومكتبة عامّة واحدة) في جربة. تشتمل هذه المكتبات على مجموعات إباضية وغير إباضية. أستفدنا مرّة أخرى من إعانة مؤسسة أركاديا وبرنامج الأرشيفات المهدّدة بالانقراض ويمكن إيجاد مزيد المعلومات هنا في موقع المكتبة البريطانية. وكذلك أدير هذا المشروع بالتعاون مع الدكتور علي البوجديدي (جامعة قابس) الذي سترونه في الفيديو الأول وهو يشرح إطار المشروع العام. سأضيف صورا متعلّقة بالمشروع تدريجيا بعد إتمام رقمنة كل مكتبة
El Trouk Mosque (2019-20) | مكتبة جامع الترك
The El Trouk Mosque Library was assembled in the early-20th century from a number of different collections throughout the island. The collection belongs to the El Trouk Mosque, which in the 20th century was a regional “branch” of the famous Zaytuna Mosque in Tunis. It was the largest collection in our project (and the only technically public library) and comprised over 200 volumes of manuscripts, lithographs, and early printed Arabic books from across the Mediterranean.
أول مكتبة في المشروع (وأكبرها) هي مكتبة جامع الترك في حومة السوق بجربة. تكوّنت المكتبة في القرن العشرين عند إجماع عدّة مكتبات صغيرة في حومة السوق. في القرنين التاسع عشر والعشرين كان جامع الترك فرعا من جامع الزيتونة في تونس. رصيد المكتبة قيّم وتتكون من حوالي 200 مجلدا منها مخطوطات وطبعات حجرية من عدّة بلدان في منطقة البحر المتوسط. ترون هنا فيديو من عملية إرجاع المكتبة إلى الجامع بعد إتمام رقمنتها ووضع المجلّدات في الصناديق الأرشيفية

Chahed Family Library (2020) | مكتبة عائلة الشاهد
The Chahed (al-Shāhid) family library belonged to last Imam of the El Trouk Mosque prior to independence, Tayyeb Chahed. The library contains a rich collection of early Arabic print materials from Tunisia, Morocco, and Egypt as well as a small number of manuscripts, including Chahed’s Friday sermons. The team completed the digitisation of the library in summer 2020. Photos coming soon!
كانت مكتبة الشاهد المكتبة الثانية في المشروع. كانت ملكا خاصّا لآخر الأئمة الذين رأسوا الجامع في القرن العشرين وهو الشيخ الطيّب الشاهد. تتكون المكتبة من مجموعة قيمة من الطبعات الحجرية وغير الحجرية من تونس والمغرب ومصر فضلا عن مجموعة صغيرة من المخطوطات (منها خطب الجمعة مثلا). أكمل الفريق رقمنة المكتبة في صيف 2020 وسأضع صورا منها في المستقبل القريب
Mhinni El Barouni Library (2020) | مكتبة الشيخ مهني الباروني
The Mhinni El Barouni Library comprises Ibadi and non-Ibadi manuscript titles and its collection historically connected to the well-known El Barounia Library in Djerba. In addition to a rich manuscript collection, the library holds a number of Ibadi lithographs from late-19th and early-20th century Cairo. The EAP1216 team began work on the library in summer 2020.
في صيف عام 2020، بدأ الفريق بتنظيم المكتبة الثالثة في المشروع وهي مكتبة الشيخ مهني الباروني. ترجع هذه المكتبة الى أصل مشترك بالمكتبة البارونية في حومة السوق بجربة. إضافة إلى مجموعة قيّمة من المخطوطات الإباضية وغير الإباضية، في هذه المكتبة طبعات حجرية من آخر القرن التاسع عشر طُبعت في المطبعة الإباضية المعروفة” بالمطبعة البارونية” في القاهرة
