It’s been a busy semester of classes and I haven’t had much time to write. When I saw one particular document from the British Archives today, however, I decided to make time. The document in question comes from a folder entitled “15/3 Vol I XV – B/1 VISITORS SUSPECTS & UNDESIRABLES SULEMAN AL BARUNI AL NAFUSI & HIS RELATIVES Jan 1923 – June 1940” (BNA Kew, shelf mark IOR/R/15/6/449), part of a massive collection of archival documents relating to the Gulf region made fully accessible to all by the digital online library of the Qatar National Library. This particular document carries the title: “Shaikh Sulaiman Pasha Al Baruni : a brief sketch of his life.”

The document provides a very brief description of the career of the remarkable Ibadi scholar, printer, revolutionary, and pan-Islamist thinker Sulaymān b. ʿAbdallāh ‘Pasha’ al-Bārūnī (d.1940). I have been looking for more information from one particular chapter of his life when he visited Egypt after having left the Jebel Nafusa in Tripolitania.

This is because my current book project is on the history of the Buffalo Agency (Wikālat al-Jāmūs) in the Ṭūlūn district of Cairo, where al-Bārūnī–like most Maghribi Ibadis in Egypt both before and after him–spent some time. Despite what this brief CV suggests, he actually visited Cairo twice: once as a student in 1893 and later in 1906 when he set up his famous Al-Azhār al-Bārūniyya printing press. [1] I have not yet figured out during which one, but during one of these two periods he endowed a book for the Buffalo Agency library.

Al-Bārūnī spent much of his later life after leaving Cairo in exile in Oman, where he tried without success for years to get back to Tripolitania. I couldn’t help but smile when I saw the document, as I imagined Sulaymān Bāsha submitting a version of it with his job application to work with the British or French intelligence against the Italians in Libya at the outset of World War II, shortly before his death in Bombay in 1940.

كان الفصل الدراسي هذا فعلا مشغول ومشغّل جدا ولم يترك لي وقتا للكتابة. ولكني رأيت هذه الوثيقة اليوم وقرّرت أن أخصّص وقتا لكتابة شيء قصير عنها. يوجد في ملف من الأرشيف البريطاني الوطني (ومتوفر مجانا بفضل المكتبة القطرية الرقمية) بعنوان: “شخصيات غير مغروبة ومشكوكة بها: سليمان الباروني النفوسي وأقاربه.” (انظر وصف الصورة لرقم الملف).  تلخّص هذه الوثيقة بذاتها تفاصيل حياة هذه الشخصية الإباضية المشهورة من جبل نفوسة: سليمان بن عبد الله “باشا” الباروني (ت١٩٤٠م) الذي كان في آن واحد ثائرا وعالما ومفكّرا وناشرا وديبلوماسيا [1]ـ

أقوم حاليا بالبحث لكتاب حول تاريخ المدرسة الإباضية بالقاهرة المسمية بـ”وكالة الجاموس” وسليمان الباروني مرّ بالوكالة مثل أكثرية الإباضية المغاربة الذين زاروا القاهرة في القرنين التاسع عشر والعشرين. جاء سليمان الباروني إلى القاهرة مرّتين: أولهما طالبا عام ١٨٩٣ وثانيهما ناشرا في  ١٩٠٦ لما أنشأ “مطبعة الأزهار البارونية.”  خلال إحدى الفترتين، أوقف كتابا لمكتبة الوكالة أيضا

لسنوات كثيرة بعد أن غادر القاهرة، بقي سليمان الباروني في المنفى بعُمان حيث حاول بلا جدوى الرجوع إلى طرابلس الغرب. كان يجب علي الابتسام لما رأيت الوثيقة هذه وتصوّرت الباشا وهو يسلّم سيرته الذاتية للبريطانيين أو للفرنسيين ليخدّموه ويبعثوه إلى تونس لمقاومة الإطاليين في بداية الحرب العالمية الثانية وذلك سنوات قليلة قبل وفاته في بومبَي (الهند) في عام ١٩٤٠م
