An article of mine recently appeared at the end of last year (2018)  in the Journal of Islamic Manuscripts (Brill) entitled “Ibadis on (and in) the Margins: Manuscript Notes from the Buffalo Agency in Early-Modern Cairo.” In it, I lay out the starting point for my book project on the Buffalo Agency relating to the integration of Ibadi merchants and scholars into the legal, religious, and commercial life of Ottoman Cairo.

This article builds on my recent study of manuscripts from the Buffalo Agency’s library but of course also relies on the work of my colleagues in the field of Ibadi Studies. Recently re-reading an article by Augustin Jomier entitled “Les réseaux étendus d’un archipel saharien. Les circulations de lettrés ibadites (XVII^e siècle-années 1950)” that appeared in 2016 [1] in the Revue d’histoire moderne & contemporaine, I noticed that  while focused on a later period, his argument resembles my own.

I am quite sure I had read either this piece or another work by Augustin prior to writing my own article, but I had not made the connection nor had I realized the gravity of the similarity until receiving a message from him in which he was, quite understandably, upset at my not having cited his work. While I did not intentionally reiterate his arguments, I nevertheless recognize the similarity and I admit the failure to see this connection. I want to apologize publicly for not having made connection earlier and for not having cited his work.

نشرت مقالا جديدا حول تاريخ وكالة الجاموس بمجلّة المخطوطات الإسلامية في آخر العام الماضي عنوانه: “الإباضية على الهوامش (وفيها): نصوص مخطوطة من وكالة الجاموس في القاهرة. فيه، أطرح الفكرة المبدئية لمشروعي لكتاب الجديد حول تاريخ الوكالة وهو يركّز على فكرة الافتتاح عند الإباضية للمجتمع العثماني في مصر

يؤسس المقال على أبحاثي المؤخرة حول المخطوطات التي كانت موجودة في مكتبة الوكالة ولكنه يبنى أيضا على أبحاث زملائي في مجال الدراسات الإباضية.  في الشهر الماضي، أعدت قراءة مقال من زميلي الأستاذ أغوسطان جومي حول الشبكات العلمية عند الإباضية في العصر الاستعماري ظهر في عام ٢٠١٦ ولاحظت تشابها بين الأفكار المطروحة في مقاله وبين تلك في مقالي

لم أكن واعيا بالجدية التشابه حتى وصلت إليّ رسالة من أغوسطان وهو –طبيعة الحال وله الحق–عاضبا مني لأنّي لم أذكر مقاله في المقال. مع أنّه لم تكن نيتي أن أعيد أفكاره بدون ذكر مصدرها فذلك هو الذي حدث. لذا، أريد أن أعتذر منه لهذا الخطأ ولهذا الفشل في الربط بين عمله القيم والمقال
